Google Bard is undoubtedly one of the best AI chatbots on the market. Between state-of-the-art natural language processing, powered by its new AI model called Gemini, and multimodality that rivals OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google is breaking new ground. Multimodality is the word of the day, with generative AI image generation now possible within the world’s most popular search engine. The new search generative experience (SGE) allows anyone to create AI art with Google, but you do need to switch it on first. Here’s how.
How to generate AI images with Google Search Generative Experience (SGE)
Google Search just got multimodal. You can now use Google as an AI image generator, just like Bard. The new generative AI-powered search experience makes AI more accessible than ever before, a there’s only one setting to change. Here’s where to find it!
Step
Google Labs
Navigate to the Google Labs website. Here you’ll find all Google Experiments (There’s some really interesting stuff that Google is working on in secret!)
Step
Customize Google Search
Scroll down to the Google Search category (the first category on the page) and click “Get Started”.
To be eligible to access Google Search Labs, you must be using Chrome browser, be 18 or over, and be using a personal Google Account that you manage on your own.
Step
SGE Generative AI in Search
Enable “SGE generative AI in search”. That’s it!
Step
Prompt Google Search
Navigate to Google Search while using the Google Chrome browser, and prompt Google as you would Bard (or any other AI chatbot).
Starting your prompt with verbs like “Imagine” or “Draw” give a clear signal to Google that you want an image and not just a standard search result.

How do I turn on generative AI in Google Search?
You can now create AI-generated images with Google’s AI-powered search. Google’s AI art generator doesn’t simply give you an image from Google Images, it can create something new, like a photorealistic image of a capybara cooking breakfast while wearing a chef’s hat.
There are eligibility requirements to enable this cutting-edge feature. If you see the image above, follow these Google guidelines to unlock this new functionality. If you’re unable to meet these requirements, consider OpenAI’s DALL-E 3, accessible via ChatGPT Plus, or Bing Image Creator available through Copilot (formerly Bing Chat) from Microsoft.
