The gaming world is getting very excited about the upcoming release of the new ASUS ROG Ally X and rumours abound about the possible specs and price of the new model. Officially though, ASUS have said they won’t formally announce the device until June 2nd so where’s all the speculation coming from?

The best part of a week ago the leaker @MysteryLupin gave a rundown on some of the ROG Ally X’s key specs which we broke down in this article. Since then though @MysteryLupin has also suggested that the Ally X will come with 24 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. If this does turn out to be true it’s great news for fans of handheld gaming.

The folks at The Verge recently got exclusive access to a prototype of the Ally X and got to see some of the minor updates to the chassis. Among other things this included a slight increase in thickness, probably because of having to house a bigger, more powerful battery.

Is the ASUS ROG Ally X worth the price increase?

Among the leeks that we’ve had thus far has been the price of the new ROG Ally X. Coming in at a hefty $799.99 it’s going to cost a whole $100 more than the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme which runs on the same CPU as the new model.

The leeks have suggested however that the Ally X is going to step up the game in a number of ways. Chief among these are probably the improved memory, batteries, and storage in the new device. We’ve already mentioned that the Ally X will purportedly ship with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory. This is a notable step up from previous versions and the Steam Deck’s 16GBs of RAM and will allow gamers to dedicate more system memory to VRAM.

Up to 8 hours of battery life will also come as a welcome upgrade from previous models as the biggest appeal of a handheld is really its portability. It kind of defeats the purpose if you’re tethered to the wall! The on board storage boost up to a 1TB SSD also means you’ll be able to take more games on the go with you.
