ASUS has recently teased a new handheld gaming device in the form of the ASUS ROG Ally X and the gaming world has lit up with speculation about the possible release date of the Ally X as well as its potential specs. Asus, however, has said they won’t formally announce the device until June 2nd.

Luckily for us, however, the leaker @MysteryLupin has given us a bit more information on the upcoming handheld including its expected launch price of $799 – which doesn’t come as a surprise, as the X is more of a beefed-up refresh more than anything.

In this article, we’ll give you a rundown of the leaked specs and how they compare to the old ROG Ally models and the Steam Deck, arguably the biggest competitor to ASUS’s new offering.

ASUS ROG Ally X leaked specs; what’s new?

With the new Ally X purportedly costing a whole $100 more than the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme and $200 more than the standard ROG Ally Z1, it’s reasonable to assume we’re getting an upgraded device but what exactly is the difference going to be?

For a start, the new Ally X is still going to be running on AMD’s Ryzen Z1 architecture but is seemingly only going to be shipping with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU since the new device is aimed squarely at creating a high-performance handheld experience.

The major changes, when compared to the previous model, come in the memory, battery, and storage departments. In ASUS’s own teaser, the company revealed that the new Ally X will come with a 40% bigger battery and upgraded LPDDR5X-7500 memory support. That’s great news especially when it comes to more demanding games as you’ll get more quality game time in. Included in the leaked features was the fact that ASUS is bumping the storage up to a whole 1TB from the previous 512GB SSD. This means you can keep an even larger game library ready at your fingertips.

In terms of the display, it looks like we’re getting a pretty much identical one to that of the previous model in the form of a 7-inch, 1080p, 120Hz panel.

ASUS ROG Ally X vs Steam Deck

So how is this new ASUS ROG Ally stacking up against the Steam Deck you ask? Well, let’s take a quick look at how the main features stack up against the Steam Decks.

As you can see from the table above, the comparison between the Ally X and Steam Deck is pretty favorable for ASUS’s new offering from what we know so far. The biggest downside of the new Ally for most people is probably going to be the price as it is notably more expensive than both the Steam Deck and the previous Allys. That’s a decision only you can make!
