If you found yourself wanting to go on one, or more of the most popular websites around the globe such as Amazon, Twitch, Reddit, or eBay, you’ve more than likely been faced with continuous errors. This is unfortunately due to the fact that one of the largest content delivery network (CDN) providers, Fastly, is experiencing outages, forcing integral corners of the web offline.
The list of websites that have been hit with the Fastly outage is seemingly ever-growing but here is a short list of the more visited sites on the web;
- Amazon
- BBC
- CNN
- eBay
- Etsy
- Giphy
- New York Times
- PayPal
- Square
- Squarespace
- The Verge
- Twitch
- Vimeo
I, myself, experienced this outage as it played out on Twitch and Amazon with continuous 503 service unavailable errors and notices of Guru Meditation plaguing my browser for hours. I first went to the fastest news reporting service on the net, Reddit, and was met with even more errors, sparking concerns that this was the end of days as we know it… Fortunately, Twitter was still alive and came to the rescue, curbing my online itch.
While Fastly reported that they were experiencing some issues with their services around 10 AM UTC, they provided no insight into what caused these outages. All that we can hope for is that this is some sort of internal issue and not a form of DDoS or Cyberattack as there could be some serious implications if so.
All of the affected websites are now slowly coming back online but whether they’re in a stable state is a whole different story. It could be some hours until they reach full stability and users get the experience they were looking for.
