What does a Nvidia and Microsoft collaboration mean for Copilot+ PCs?

In a blog post, Nvidia discusses this collaboration and explains how the inclusion of RTX GPUs in Copilot+ PCs will help to increase the overall power of the devices and make them capable of handling the demanding AI workloads of the products.

“In the coming months, Copilot+ PCs equipped with new power-efficient systems-on-a-chip and RTX GPUs will be released, giving gamers, creators, enthusiasts and developers increased performance to tackle demanding local AI workloads, along with Microsoft’s new Copilot+ features”

Nvidia – Blog post

Microsoft’s decision to incorporate RTX GPUs within the design of Copilot+ PCs will likely increase the amount of interest that is shown for these devices. Being popular among gamers already, Nvidia’s RTX GPUs will create a significant difference in the overall power of the devices and will allow them to be more capable when completing heavyweight AI tasks. Although an official date hasn’t been reported, this collaboration will seemingly take place sometime in the near future, as suggested by Nvidia stating “In the coming months”. This isn’t the only time Nvidia has been aloof with the release plans of AI-related products, it recently confirmed that Nvidia AI PCs are in the pipeline and should be released sometime next year.

In its statement, Nvidia mentions that it will be combining RTX GPUs with “new power-efficient systems-on-a-chip” and currently there have only been talks of the inclusion of Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X to Copilot+ PCs. Given that there would be issues to address in a Snapdragon-powered device with an RTX GPU, it could be argued that Nvidia is suggesting that it is preparing for a more likely collaboration with an Intel or AMD-power Copilot+ PC. Perhaps with the introduction of Intel Lunar Lake or AMD Strix Point, which will meet the requirements for Copilot+ PCs, we’ll see a collaboration between Nvidia and one of these brands.

Either way, it’s an exciting announcement that makes the introduction of Windows 11’s AI features all the more enticing.
