PC and console gaming platforms aren’t the only ones making waves. Lately, handheld devices for mobile gamers have seen a rise in better designs and specifications. However, it’ll still take some time for handheld devices to reach the level of gaming PCs and Consoles, especially when it comes to higher resolutions and recording, both aspects that are essential for content creation and the respective professionals.

That said, AVermedia might have solved this problem with their new docking station, which enables mobile devices to record high-resolution gaming footage. This technology should bridge the gap between mobile and other gaming devices and provide an avenue for mobile gamers to take a shot at content creation at a different level. We got a sneak peek of the device from AVermedia in a post on X, but let’s take a closer look.

Introducing the X’tra Go GC515

On PCs, you could install a capture card or use software to record gaming footage and edit it later. But now at Computex 2024, AVermedia has unveiled the X’Tra Go GC515 docking station for handheld devices like the Steam Deck, MSI Claw, ROG Ally, Nintendo Switch, and even your mobile phone.

It has a simple design and functionality. It features two USB-C ports, an HDMI port, and two USB-A ports. So, you can use the USB-C ports to power and connect it to a PC, while the HDMI port should let you display the game on a bigger (and/or higher resolution) monitor. However, the best part about it is the button at the base, which you simply have to press once. It’ll start recording in either 4K 30Hz or 1080p 120Hz and save the footage to an SD card.

Although you will still need a laptop or a PC and an SD card reader to transfer and edit the recording, the fact that you can still capture 4K footage on handheld devices is impressive. This should also open up possibilities of creating content on the go, editing it on your laptop, and posting it on your social media, keeping the algorithm well-fed and engaged.

Lastly, AVerMedia’s X’Tra Go GC515 should also be able to charge your Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and other mobile gaming devices, providing another layer of accessibility that many should appreciate.

The X’Tra Go GC515’s full specifications, price, release date, and availability haven’t been announced yet, but it should be a surefire hit if it delivers everything it claims to do.
